Well for all of us who have forgotten why Diwali is celebrated exactly here’s a brief detail of why is Diwali celebrated. Diwali is said to be a celebration of the marriage of Goddess Laksmi and Lord Vishnu. While some believe Diwali also denotes the return of Lord Rama from his fourteen year exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In the happiness of the return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, illuminated the kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) and burst crackers. Hence Diwali is also called festival of lights.  Hence people perform Pooja of goddess Laksmi and burst crackers along with lighting earthen diyas! People also clean their houses before the onset of the four days of Diwali in order to please goddess Laksmi  (The goddess of money).Along with this people exchange gifts with close family and friends.

Diwali also has gambling tradition associated with it. It is believed that on this day Parvati (wife of Lord shiva) played dice with her husband whole night. And she declared that whoever would gamble on the Diwali day would prosper throughout the year!!
