Hey all lovely people!!! Hope everyone is having a good time. My cousin got married about 2 months back. And she approached me for one thing – suggestion for a bridal makeup kit. Nope, not the one you need for makeup on your D-day, but the one you need post your marriage. The makeup kit that will help you get ready for ‘mooh -dekhai’, family dinners and first few days of ‘married’ makeup to work. 😉 Ya, we get back to plain basics in no time. So, I thought of writing my thoughts on what your makeup kit should ideally have. This pertains to new brides, but can used as a pointer by anyone who plans to own a small makeup kit.
Lot of people will tell you that you do not need a primer. A moisturizer should do. But, I beg to differ. Even if you use a moisturizer, primer is essential for setting a long lasting makeup base. Oily skinned beauties will need it to control the ‘shiny’ skin. And normal to dry will require to take care of dry patches on the skin. Indian markets have still not experienced the primer ‘wars’. But, still Revlon and Maybelline have some good primers in the market.
Insider Tip: Use milk of magnesia sparingly for oily skin and T-zone. Yup, it works like a charm. 🙂
I know everybody knows about the foundation. But pick up one that blends nicely and does not look cakey. You will not have lot of time to get ready after marriage; other things take precedence over makeup. 🙁 So, you will need a foundation that gives a good coverage, blends easily and sets quickly. My ultimate favorite is Lakme Absolute Mattreal Skin Natural Mousse. A foundation with golden undertones that works for Indians and not give you an artificial cast like other pink-based foundations.
Long nights and new responsibilities will give you dark circles. You WILL need a concealer girl. Again, opt for something that is creamy and blends easily. At times, when you are really running short of time, just a concealer will make you look awake and bright. Pick up one according to your needs. Dark circles and blemishes require different kind of concealers.
4. Powder Foundation/ Loose powder/ Compact powder
Yes, there are many kinds of powders. There are others that I have not included to keep things simple. If you need more coverage post foundation and concealer or you want to skip foundation, the powder foundation is your best friend. It will set your base and provide you with some more coverage. But, if you only need to set your makeup or mattify your skin, then opt for loose powder or compact powder depending on your preferences. Compact powder is very travel friendly and great for throwing in your bag for quick touch-ups during the day.
5. Eyeshadow Palette
Opt for a neutral palette that has at least one matte dark brown color for crease. You can buy some bright shades separately. Also, pickup one shimmer eyeshadow at least that can be used for highlighting your eyes as well as the cheeks. There are lot of less expensive options like VoV and the drugstore options like Maybelline and Revlon quads.
6. Eyeliner/ Kajal/ Masacara
These three things will keep come handy when you have no time for an elaborate eye makeup. Smudge your eyeliner or kajal on the upper lid and apply mascara on your lashes. And you are ready to face a new day and whatever comes with it. 🙂
A glowing face is the sign of a happy bride, atleast thats what they say 😉 You should have atleast two shades of blush in your stack. A pink and a peach. If you are not into highlighters, then pick a shimmery peach color, so that it adds the required sparkle on your face. Maybelline and L’Oreal have some good blush options. For highlighter, try the new Colorbar shimmer strips.
Well, I should not be commenting on how many lipsticks you should have. I have lost count of mine 😉 Anyways, have atleast these four shades of lipsticks – n*de, pink, coral and red. These will be enough to cover all your dresses and sarees. Pick up a neutral shade of gloss as well to add the shine whenever you need it.
Last, but not the least, brushes will make and break your makeup. You may get expensive products but without appropriate brushes, you will not get the look you going for. Vega and Lakme have good variety of brushes in their collection. The essential ones are – eyeshadow brush, blending brush, blush brush, powder brush and a foundation brush. The use of these brushes will ease the makeup application and make you look all set for the occasion.
Hope this post helps you to decide what all to put in your kit. This is a very basic kit; you can obviously add on more. There are so many options available in market at various price points. Pick up the best you can staying within your budget. After all, it is just makeup. Happiness and love is the secret of a glowing bride. 🙂
