The word backwaters bring in a lot of excitement to many of us. Yes I am talking about the beautiful backwaters of Kerala – The God’s Own Country. Kerala is the southern most state of our country with Arabian sea along the shores. Apart from this there are number of rivers and lakes in this small state.

Now lets talk about the backwaters, they are small lagoons formed parallel to the Arabian sea. They are originally formed by the action of sea waves and shore currents and interconnected by the canals, lakes and rivers. The most fascinating thing to notice here is the life of the people near the backwaters. They have their home surrounded by water on all sides and most households have their own small manual or motor boats to commute.

Kerala tourism is mainly based on the backwaters apart from the hill stations like Munnar, waynad and beaches along with temples. The houseboat ride on the backwaters is an amazing experience. The luxurious House boat is not less than a star hotel with all the facilities. A best pick for the Honeymoon couple who love water ride, just you and the nature 🙂

You can hire the houseboat either for day and night or you can choose a whole day ride and later check-in to a resort near backwaters for the night stay. The boat ride starts by 10.00 am in the morning covering the beautiful backwaters, you can enjoy the nature’s beauty relaxing in the boat with a glass of toddy 😛 ( the fermented coconut drink –  coconut wine , I do not like the taste ) and fish fry (freshly caught and fried by the cook in the house boat). You can show your photography skills here with some wonderful clicks 😀 . The houseboats need to be halted by 5.00 pm as per the government rule. So even if you opt for night stay in houseboat you cannot go for a night ride in the water.

The best time to visit the backwaters would be from October to February, just after monsoons and before summer. If you are not a resident of Kerala you can plan a trip covering the backwaters of Kumarakom, waterfalls of Athirapally, the famous padmanabhaswamy temple and  the Kovalam beach in Trivandrum, marvelous high range area of Munnar etc as per your choice and feasibility.
